Just because.
Tribute to Jeff Rice (Creator of Kolchack: The Night Stalker)
Like many people my age, I grew up with a few cultural icons that inspired wonder and fear.
As a small child, The Incredible Hulk scared me enough that I had to run to find my Dad every time Bill Bixby stepped aside for a green-painted, scowling Lou Ferrigno to take the stage. I was young enough that climbing the stairs up from the basement was still a chore, but I wouldn't have missed that show for the world.
I didn't catch the original run of Kolchack: The Night Stalker when it aired on ABC in the '70s, but when I talk to those who did, I recognize that same mix of wonder and delight.
Mark Dawidziak of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is one of those kids who grew up with Kolchack. And when Kolchack's creator Jeff RIce passed away, Mark sat down to compose this touching and thoughtful reminiscence of Mr. Rice, his creation, and the mark they both left on popular culture.
Jeff Rice, creator of Kolchack
As a horror fan, I think of Dan Curtis, Darin McGavin, and Richard Matheson as the creative forces behind Kolchack. It's true that they were instrumental in shaping the movie and series, but none of it would have existed without Jeff Rice's novel paving the way.
It's a story worth reading.
Audio version of "Outpatient" now live!
I'm delighted to say that my short story "Outpatient" has been selected by the folks at the Nature Podcast as their favorite for July. They've produced an audio version of the story, and I couldn't be happier with it!
With a really fun reading by Shamini Bundell and direction by Adam Levy, the audio is now available free of charge here or on iTunes under the Nature Podcast.
"Outpatient" now up at Nature
The journal Nature was first published in 1869. It soon established itself as the pre-eminent interdisciplinary scientific publication in the world, and went on to become the first publisher of landmark findings such as the wave nature of particles, nuclear fission, the structure of DNA, and the cloning of Dolly the sheep. By 2010 it had become the most cited scientific journal in the world.
In short, it has an almost 150 year history of top-rate, quality content that incites thoughtful, cogent discourse... until today, when it published one of my short stories.
Click-through to read my story "Outpatient" at the Nature website, or pick up a physical copy at your favorite scientific-journal outlet.
(Go ahead and click--- it's free, and you need to at least pretend like you're doing something while you're at work.)
Interview on Strange Musings Press
I have a story in the new anthology from Strange Musings Press, Hysterical Realms.
As part of the release promotion I was interviewed me about my contribution, a short story called "Bath Time". The interview was fun to do, and I'm looking forward to reading the whole book as soon as it arrives.
The interview is here, if you'd like to read it.
Kevin Spacey on Storytelling in Marketing
Kevin Spacey nicely summarizes the power of story in marketing communications, at an event for the Content Marketing Institute.
An engaging story delivered to the proper audience will catch fire, spreading far faster than any structured campaign. Story is how we naturally communicate, and the sooner marketing professionals learn that lesson, the better.
New Post at Needham Electric Supply
My post about Photovoltaic Roof Systems appears at the Needham Electric Supply website. It gives an interesting glance at the forces driving the shift in 'green thinking', and what that means for the contractors who install and maintain PV roofs.
